Sangmin Lee
South Korean baritone Sangmin Lee, a native of Seoul, completed his vocal studies at Yonsei University and earned a postgraduate degree at the Dresden University of Music. While in Dresden, he gained early stage experience as a member of the Dresden Semperoper Opernstudio, and later joined the ensemble in 2007. That same year, he won first prize in the Competizione dell’Opera in Dresden.
At the Semperoper, Mr. Lee performed key roles such as Conte Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, Ford in Falstaff, Marcello in La Bohème, and Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia. In 2012, Mr. Lee joined the ensemble of the Theater Dortmund, where his roles have included Conte di Luna in Il trovatore, Rodrigo in Don Carlo, Renato in Un ballo in maschera, Germont in La Traviata, and the title roles in Nabucco and Eugene Onegin.
Mr. Lee has also appeared as a guest artist in major houses across Europe and Asia, including the National Theatre Prague (Germont), Polish National Opera (Duca di Nottingham), Vienna State Opera (Germont), Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Rigoletto), and since 2018 has been a member of the Ensemble at Staatstheater Nürnberg, where his performances have included Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Friedrich von Telramund in Lohengrin, and Golaud in Pelléas et Mélisande.
Upcoming engagements for the 2024/25 season at the Staatstheater Nürnberg include his highly anticipated portrayals of Escamillo in Carmen and the title role in Macbeth.
