Mikko Järviluoto
Finnish bass Mikko Järviluoto was born in Joensuu and began his vocal studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. In 2004, he moved to Germany as an exchange student and completed his diploma in opera performance at the University of Music Karlsruhe under Prof. Ingrid Haubold.
From 2010 to 2013, he was a member of the ensemble at the Volkstheater Rostock, where he sang roles including Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Don Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), Colline (La Bohème), and Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia). Since the 2013/14 season, he has been a member of the ensemble at the Meininger Staatstheater, where his roles have included Osmin (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Crespel (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Reinmar von Zweter (Tannhäuser), the Hotel Manager in Thomas Adès’ Powder Her Face, Zuniga (Carmen), and the Innkeeper (Man of La Mancha), among others.
Järviluoto has also appeared as a guest at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, singing Dottore Grenvil (La Traviata, 2015) and Ceprano (Rigoletto, 2017) under the direction of Lawrence Foster and Philippe Auguin, respectively. In 2013, he took part in the world premiere of Christobal Halffter’s Die Schachnovelle at Theater Kiel. In 2024, he appeared at the Staatstheater Braunschweig in roles including Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia) and the Fifth Jew and Second Soldier in Salome.
His repertoire ranges from the Classical and Romantic core bass roles—such as Sarastro, Osmin, and Hunding—to contemporary and character roles in works by Thomas Adès, Christobal Halffter, and Aulis Sallinen. Additional repertoire includes Fasolt (Das Rheingold), Jacob Engstrand (Gespenster), the Cook (The Love for Three Oranges), Betto di Signa (Gianni Schicchi), and Surin (Pique Dame)
