Polish bass Mateusz Hoedt, born in Wrocław in 1990, studied under Prof. Bogdan Makal at the University of Music in Wrocław, where he earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He went on to join the Opera Academy at the Grand Theatre in Warsaw (2014–2016), training with Eytan Pessen, and continued his development at the Académie de l’Opéra National de Paris during the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons. From 2019 to 2022, he was a member of the Junges Ensemble at the Semperoper Dresden, where he now appears regularly as a guest soloist.
Mr. Hoedt has performed a wide range of roles across major European houses. At the Semperoper Dresden, his repertoire has included Thore/Maurevert in Les Huguenots, Antonio in Le nozze di Figaro, the Imperial Commissary in Madama Butterfly, Priest and Second Armed Man in Die Zauberflöte, and the Jailer in Tosca. At the Opéra National de Paris, he appeared as Pinellino in Gianni Schicchi and the Deputato in Don Carlos, a role he also performed at the Teatro Real de Madrid and the Semperoper Dresden. Other engagements include Surin in Pique Dame at the Staatstheater Kassel, Crespel/Luther in Les Contes d’Hoffmann and Dottore Grenvil in La traviata at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, and Arthur Jones in Billy Budd at the Grand Theatre in Warsaw and Grand Theatre in Łódź. At the Verbier Festival, he appeared as the Commendatore in Don Giovanni.
His early stage experience includes roles in student productions such as Masetto (Don Giovanni), Don Alvar (Les Indes Galantes), Thomassini (Au travers du mur), and Dbalski (Agatka, czyli przyjazd pana). He also performed in concert versions of Rusalka (Waterman) and Aleko (Old Gypsy) in the Netherlands. Several planned productions at the Semperoper Dresden—including roles such as Zuniga in Carmen and Ceprano in Rigoletto—were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr. Hoedt has appeared in concert at prominent venues such as the Opéra Bastille, Palais Garnier, Semperoper Dresden, Grand Theatre in Warsaw, and NOSPR in Katowice. His oratorio repertoire includes Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, Beethoven’s Mass in C major, and Mozart’s Requiem in D minor and Coronation Mass, among others. He has participated in master classes with artists including Bryn Terfel, Ildar Abdrazakov, Neil Shicoff, and Elena Pankratova.
