Bavarian Bass Andreas Hörl studied voice with Kurt Moll at the Cologne University of Music and participated in masterclasses with Mechthild Gessendorf, Reinhard Leisenheimer, Jan-Hendrik Rootering, Harald Stamm, and Hermann Winkler. Following his studies, he joined the International Opera Studio of the Hamburg State Opera in 1999. Early on, he recorded the role of the Hermit in Der Freischütz under Bruno Weil for WDR alongside Christoph Prégardien and Christian Gerhaher, and later Königskinder with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin under Ingo Metzmacher.
From 2001 to 2005, Hörl was a member of the ensemble at the Hamburg State Opera, followed by two seasons with the Cologne Opera. His early debuts included major roles such as Baron Ochs (Der Rosenkavalier, Bremerhaven, 2004) and the Landgrave (Tannhäuser, Minden, 2005).
Between 2007 and 2012, Hörl was part of the ensemble at the Opernhaus Zürich, where he performed in productions of La Bohème with Jonas Kaufmann and Barbara Frittoli, Le Cid with José Cura, and Don Giovanni with Anna Netrebko. He collaborated with conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Daniele Gatti, Franz Welser-Möst, Peter Schneider, and Ingo Metzmacher. From 2012 to 2014, Hörl was engaged at the Wiener Staatsoper, performing roles including Titurel, Sarastro, Commendatore, Warlaam, and the Badger and Priest in Das schlaue Füchslein under the direction of Otto Schenk. His musical collaborators included Simone Young, Franz Welser-Möst, and Gerald Finley.
Since 2015, Hörl has pursued a freelance career, debuting at the Bayreuth Festival as Fafner in Das Rheingold and Siegfried under Kirill Petrenko in Frank Castorf’s Ring des Nibelungen. That same year, he also appeared as Titurel in Parsifal für Kinder. Additional highlights include his debut at La Scala in Milan as the First Apprentice in Wozzeck under Ingo Metzmacher and King Marke at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma under Daniele Gatti. Hörl has since returned to Bayreuth in productions of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Der Ring des Nibelungen, as well as to Odense, where he performed Fafner and Hunding in a televised Ring production with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.
Hörl’s repertoire spans key bass roles, including Sarastro, Osmin, Commendatore, Baron Ochs, Basilio, Colline, King Heinrich, King Marke, Kaspar/Hermit, Ramfis, Warlaam, Hunding, and Hagen. In addition to the core operatic repertoire, he has a particular interest in 20th-century music and the great choral works of sacred literature, including compositions by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Verdi, and Rossini.
Throughout his career, Hörl has performed with leading orchestras and renowned conductors, including Claudio Abbado, who invited him to perform Tristan und Isolde with the Berlin Philharmonic at the Salzburg Easter Festival and for a subsequent guest performance in Tokyo. Recent and upcoming engagements include Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte and Hans Schwarz in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.
