Korean tenor Andrea Shin studied voice in Seoul, Novara, at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, the Prayner Conservatory in Vienna, and at the Accademia Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He is a prizewinner at several international competitions, including the “Voci Verdiane” competition and the Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna.
In 2020, Mr. Shin appeared as Calaf in Turandot at the Staatstheater Darmstadt and at the Oper im Steinbruch in St. Margarethen. In the 2019/20 season, he returned to Oper Dortmund as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly and appeared in the opera gala Un bel dì vedremo. He had previously performed Calaf at the same theater during the 2018/19 season. In 2020, he also sang Alvaro in La forza del destino at the Daegu International Opera Festival.
Mr. Shin made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera New York in 2018 as Roméo in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, following a previous engagement there in the 2016/17 season as a cover for the roles of Roméo, Rodolfo, and the Duke. Other recent guest appearances include performances as Cavaradossi and Pinkerton at the Staatsoper Stuttgart, and as Calaf at the Staatstheater Darmstadt.
During the 2015/16 season, Mr. Shin was a member of the ensemble at the Staatsoper Hannover, where he sang roles including the title role in Werther and the Duke in Rigoletto. From 2011 to 2015, he was a member of the ensemble at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe. His roles there included Rodolfo (La Bohème), Alfredo (La Traviata), Cavaradossi (Tosca), the Duke (Rigoletto), Don José (Carmen), King Gustav (Un ballo in maschera), Alfred (Die Fledermaus), Grigory (Boris Godunov), and the Italian Singer (Der Rosenkavalier).
Mr. Shin is a laureate of several international competitions, including prizes at the “Voci Verdiane” and the Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition.
