Andrea Shin
Korean tenor Andrea Shin studied voice in Seoul, Novara, at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Prayner Conservatory in Vienna, and at the Academy of La Scala in Milan. He is a prizewinner at numerous international competitions, including the “Voci Verdiane” and the Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna.
From 2011 to 2015, Mr. Shin was a member of the ensemble at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, where he performed roles such as Rodolfo (La Bohème), the Duke (Rigoletto), Don José (Carmen), Cavaradossi (Tosca), King Gustav (Un ballo in maschera), Alfred (Die Fledermaus), Grigory (Boris Godunov), and the Italian Singer (Der Rosenkavalier).
Guest engagements have taken Mr. Shin to the Staatsoper Stuttgart (Cavaradossi, Pinkerton), Oper Dortmund (Edgardo, Calaf), Landestheater Linz (Florian in Das Testament, Cassio), Staatstheater Mainz (Faust), Theater Freiburg (Ismaele), and the Staatstheater Darmstadt (Calaf). Since the 2015/16 season, he has been a member of the ensemble at the Staatsoper Hannover, where his roles have included Alfredo (La Traviata), Cavaradossi, the Duke, Don José, and Werther.
In the 2016/17 season, Mr. Shin was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in New York as a cover for three leading tenor roles: Roméo, Rodolfo, and the Duke. He made his company debut in April 2018 as Roméo in Roméo et Juliette. In spring 2019, he appeared as Calaf in Turandot at Theater Dortmund, a role he reprised in the 2019/20 season at both the Staatstheater Darmstadt and the Oper im Steinbruch in St. Margarethen. Additional recent engagements include Alvaro (La forza del destino) at the Daegu International Opera Festival.
